Over Time
Enterprise AI is settling into channels, stacks and infrastructure rather than one assistant
This week tightened a line that had already started to show: generative AI in business is being organised less around a single assistant and more around the route by which models reach work. Microsoft ended standalone Copilot Pro sales and tied ongoing access to Microsoft 365 plans, while also launching a partner-led small-business trial and releasing Orchard as an open framework for agentic AI. Oracle expanded its partnership with Google Cloud so Gemini can run inside Oracle enterprise applications, AWS moved Bedrock web search into general availability inside its own cloud, and Superblocks agreed with AWS to let customers build AI applications inside private AWS environments. This appears to narrow the space for a premium assistant that stands apart from the surrounding software, because the surrounding software is increasingly becoming the product.
That does not make the model unimportant, but it does seem to make model advantage easier to redistribute through other companies' channels. OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 prices, Alibaba introduced off-peak pricing for Qwen3.7 models, and Oracle's enterprise stack added Gemini alongside other providers' models. OpenAI also launched education plugins that let institutions use agentic capabilities with their own materials and tools while retaining data control. This is likely to matter for Microsoft because a unified Copilot app can widen entry, but it cannot by itself restore scarcity if buyers can reach comparable model capability through the software they already run or through clouds they already trust.
The week also reinforced that AI demand is now reaching below software into power, packaging and server design. Microsoft reported about $41 billion in capital spending largely for AI infrastructure, AWS said its AI revenue run rate had exceeded $25 billion, Pembina approved a gas-fired plant to supply a Meta data centre, Intel described its U.S. advanced-packaging hub for very large AI chiplet packages, and Arm reported data-centre royalty growth tied to AI servers. This suggests the expansion is no longer behaving like a short product cycle at the application layer, but like a wider industrial build-out whose constraints sit in electricity, packaging and cloud capacity.
At the same time, control points are moving downward. The European Commission began enforcing AI Act transparency rules from 2 August, Mistral released an open-weight safety classifier that runs on a single 16 GB GPU, and AWS made web grounding a built-in Bedrock function for OpenAI models. That likely widens the shift away from treating safety, grounding and disclosure as optional extras attached near the user interface. The result is likely to be a market in which assistants remain visible, but bargaining power keeps moving to the stack layers that decide distribution, deployment conditions and operating cost.
Our forecast
By early autumn, the next clear move is likely to come from another enterprise software or cloud provider making third-party frontier models a built-in part of its own business stack rather than a separate AI destination.
