AI competition is moving away from frontier models alone toward control of the stack that turns models into governed execution. That shift is being carried by agent environments tied to enterprise data, workflow, security, measurement, pricing, and distribution, and by model access that is increasingly routed through managed clouds and owned work surfaces rather than offered as a free-standing release. The infrastructure race underneath remains a gigawatt-scale systems buildout around power, capacity, and financing. What is particular now is that the execution layer is hardening into a control boundary: platforms are expanding external model choice for customers while pulling more of the operating logic, economics, and some workload inside their own systems.

Microsoft adds Azure SRE Agent as Microsoft routes some Office prompts to MAI

The clearest new move came on July 8, when Microsoft announced Azure SRE Agent, an autonomous AI agent for cloud reliability operations that can monitor telemetry, investigate incidents, and apply guardrailed mitigations. It puts another Microsoft-run agent directly into day-to-day cloud operations. Microsoft also said on July 8 that autonomous operations for the Azure Copilot Observability Agent are in public preview alongside the agent’s general availability.

Just before that, TechCrunch reported on July 7, citing Bloomberg, that Microsoft has begun routing a portion of Word and Excel user prompts to its in-house MAI models instead of relying solely on OpenAI and Anthropic systems. On July 8, Microsoft also said Foundry IQ can now be connected as an intelligence source inside Copilot Studio agents.

Among the main competitors, Anthropic said on July 7 that it began rolling out its Claude Cowork tool in beta on the web and mobile for Max subscribers. Google said on July 7 that third parties can package and sell AI agents through Gemini Enterprise and Google Cloud Marketplace. OpenAI and Databricks said on July 6 that they are working together to help enterprises move from prototype to production AI agents.
