Google opens AI-media checking to the public as Microsoft prices local AI into a workstation
Google DeepMind opened a standalone SynthID Detector website that lets anyone check whether an image, video or audio file was made with Google AI or partner tools. SynthID is Google's watermarking system - a hidden marker added to media so a detector can recognise where it came from. This appears to push provenance from a promise between platforms into a tool ordinary users, publishers and moderators can apply themselves, which matters beyond Google because verification starts to become part of distribution rather than an internal safety feature.
Microsoft began taking preorders for the Surface Laptop Ultra, a $2,599 Windows PC built around an Nvidia AI chip and due to ship on 16 October, with Microsoft positioning it to run large AI models locally. Running a model locally means the work happens on the device instead of being sent to a cloud service. This suggests the dividing line in AI products is hardening into governed cloud on one side and expensive, customer-controlled local compute on the other: Microsoft is making that split visible in hardware, and buyers now have a concrete price for keeping some generative-AI work on the machine.
OpenAI released GPT-6 across free and paid ChatGPT plans worldwide and replaced GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna in ChatGPT with an "Intelligent UI" that composes answers with text, visuals and interactive elements. That is likely to matter less as a model launch on its own than as another step in turning the chatbot into an application surface, where the model is bundled with interface, media handling and task flow rather than presented as a single text box.
Meta began rolling out large-language-model tools to detect ads and accounts that route users to suspected off-platform child abuse material. Chan Zuckerberg Biohub said Meta, Alphabet, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health joined its Virtual Biology Initiative, taking committed funding to about $1.8 billion for standardised biology datasets for later public AI training. Google and Unity announced a strategic partnership around AI game-creation tools including Playground and Unity Spark.
