AI-made job scams turn hiring into a data-harvesting attack surface

Fraud investigator Jay Jones reported that scammers use AI tools to generate convincing fake recruiters and job postings, and that he has helped remove more than 58,000 fraudulent listings aimed at stealing job seekers' identities.

This suggests the operational AI problem for ordinary users is no longer only fake images or spam, but believable process-level deception inside routine services people must trust. It also appears to widen the burden beyond the platforms hosting listings: employers, job boards and identity-check providers now have reason to treat recruitment flows as a defended AI surface, because the cheap part is no longer posting at scale but manufacturing credibility at scale. For Microsoft, that likely makes provenance, account trust and workflow controls more than a media problem, because the same office and employment tools used for legitimate hiring can also be imitated closely enough to pull personal data out of applicants.
