Microsoft turns Copilot resale into metered spend
Microsoft said new Microsoft 365 Copilot Business licences sold through the Cloud Solution Provider channel will, from 2 November, come with usage-based billing switched on by default and a preset pay-as-you-go limit of $10 per user per month for eligible AI features.
This appears to shift Copilot further from ordinary seat software toward a governed service where partners and customers have to manage consumption from day one. For Microsoft, that makes the real product less the assistant alone than the control surface around it: budgets, defaults and who is allowed to spend beyond them. More broadly, it suggests enterprise AI is being sold less as a flat entitlement and more as metered capacity inside everyday software, which changes procurement and admin work well beyond Microsoft.
Cohere and Aleph Alpha signed a definitive agreement to combine into one company under the Cohere name, subject to regulatory approval later this year. We read that as a move to keep an independent enterprise-model supplier large enough to matter in regulated markets, where buyers want more than a model endpoint and increasingly need geography, hosting and governance choices. If that reading holds, the effect reaches past the two firms: it would show that smaller model companies now need scale, regional footing and channel access together, not just technical quality, to stay in contention.
Mistral and Mozilla launched a partnership that makes Mistral the model provider for Firefox Smart Window in France and North America. That looks like open-model distribution becoming a browser and device-layer habit rather than a destination users visit on purpose, which weakens the idea that one provider's own chat interface must stay the main route to consumers.
OpenAI published a framework for reporting model misalignment, meaning a process for logging, investigating and disclosing cases where a model behaves in unexpected or concerning ways. OpenAI also introduced new advertising features for ChatGPT Ads. Cohere and OpenText announced a partnership on agentic AI for governments and regulated industries. Amazon began rolling out Alexa+ in India through Early Access. HubSpot expanded its OpenAI partnership with a ChatGPT Ads integration and an AI bundle. Reporting by Heise described one researcher's estimate of high power use from Anthropic's Claude Code agent. Golem reported growing spam email sent by AI agents from iLands.
