OpenAI turns model access into a control point after Cursor joins SpaceX

OpenAI announced that it will wind down its contract supplying models to Cursor and proposed 12 November 2026 as the cutoff date, after Cursor was acquired by SpaceX.

This appears to turn model access from a neutral supplier relationship into a strategic control over who may keep building on a frontier provider's systems after ownership changes. The effect reaches beyond Cursor: any company that depends on an outside model API – the interface through which software sends prompts to a model and gets replies back – now has a fresh reason to treat that dependency as revocable when a buyer, partner or parent company changes. For Microsoft, the move makes a broader pressure easier to see: the value is less in offering one celebrated model than in controlling the full stack around models, contracts, routing and fallback options, because customers that cannot switch or self-host lose bargaining power when a supplier closes the tap.
