Stripe buys the switchboard between AI buyers and model vendors
Stripe has agreed to buy OpenRouter for more than $7 billion. OpenRouter is a single access point to hundreds of AI models, meaning one service through which a company can call many model providers instead of wiring each one separately.
We read this as a move that changes where control can sit in generative AI. If the gateway belongs to a payments company, model choice, routing and the billing around them can start to gather in the same place; that is likely to matter beyond Stripe because any company buying AI through an intermediary becomes easier to serve, price and switch at that layer. Through Microsoft, this makes one pressure sharper: the cloud is not the only place where AI can become sticky, because the layer that decides which model is used can sit above it.
