Enterprise AI shifts from assistants to governed agent estates

Manulife renewed and expanded its partnership with Microsoft for five years, adding Microsoft 365 E7 Frontier Suite, Microsoft Agent 365 for AI agent governance and a wider Microsoft 365 Copilot rollout to more than 30,000 employees, alongside Azure and Microsoft Foundry. OpenAI launched Presence, a managed enterprise platform for building, deploying and operating governed AI agents for high-volume, high-stakes workflows, though it is currently available only through limited managed deployments.

These two moves together suggest that enterprise AI is being sold less as a single assistant and more as an estate of agents that has to be governed, audited and operated. That likely matters more for Microsoft than another Copilot seat count on its own, because governance is the layer that can keep Azure, Microsoft 365 and developer tooling tied together inside one contract. We read Manulife’s deal as evidence that large customers are no longer buying generative AI as an experiment at the edge of office software, but as something that reaches procurement, compliance and platform choice at once.

Alphabet reported quarterly results with revenue up 24 per cent year on year to $119.8 billion and Google Cloud revenue up 82 per cent to $24.8 billion, which it attributed to demand for AI infrastructure and enterprise AI solutions. This likely changes the frame around Microsoft as well: the cloud pull from generative AI now appears broad enough that Microsoft is not defining the market by itself, even when Microsoft remains the clearest lens on how enterprise adoption is being packaged.
