Microsoft shifts Copilot upmarket while buying European capacity and models

Microsoft and Mistral AI said they are expanding their partnership. Microsoft will use Mistral’s Europe-based GPU infrastructure for more AI capacity and will add Mistral’s Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models to Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio, with deployment options across Azure and Azure Local.

Microsoft also updated Copilot support documentation to say that consumer Deep Research and Podcasts will be retired on 18 August, while Deep Research continues only for Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers. That combination is likely to show Microsoft doing two things at once: buying controllable supply where European location matters, and narrowing advanced Copilot functions to customers who already pay for work software. We read this as a sharper split between consumer AI as a funnel and business AI as the product that has to carry margin.

Google, meanwhile, introduced three new Gemini models, including a lower-cost workhorse model for large-scale agents and a cyber-specialised variant. That is likely to matter for Microsoft because model competition is moving further into pricing, workload tuning and distribution rather than headline access to a frontier model. When Microsoft adds Mistral inside Foundry and Copilot Studio instead of presenting one model line as the answer, that appears to fit the same shift: the platform wins by offering choice, locality and deployment control. For Microsoft, this likely moves differentiation away from owning the single best model and towards packaging, compliance and where the compute sits.
